During the reign of the second Maharaja, Chogyal Tensung Namgyal, the capital of Sikkim was shifted from Yuksam to Rabdentse. All the spring water sources in and around Rabdenste were tested for its mineral content to be served as the royal water source. The spring water in Naku Chumbong was identified to have the best mineral content and fit for royal consumption. Accordingly the spring water was called “Serchhu” Ser meaning Gold and Chu water. The royal servants carried water for the place at Rabdentse in bamboo containers called Padungs.
